Maternity Wardrobe Staples – The Items You Need To Invest In
I know most people don’t like to spend a ton of money on a maternity wardrobe and I TOTALLY get it. I don’t either. Why spend a fortune on clothes you’ll only wear for a few months?
Sure, maybe you’ll have more kids but unless you have them back-to-back chances are you’ll want newer styles the next time a pregnancy rolls around.
I got pregnant with my son when my daughter was only 9 months old so it felt like I never even had a chance to put them away. Now that I’m pregnant for the third time and haven’t been pregnant in 3 years I’m looking at my maternity wardrobe like “What were you thinking when you bought that?!”
Even though the styles and my personal style have changed in the last few years, the staple items that I always got a ton of use out of are pretty much still the same.
So today, I wanted to share with you some maternity wardrobe essentials I think every pregnant woman should invest in!
Maternity Wardrobe Staples
Layering Tanks
It doesn’t matter if it’s spring, summer, winter, or fall these tanks are so versatile. I wear mine with cute (non-maternity) cardigans ALL THE TIME!
They’re also perfect for sleeping since they usually have the ruching down the sides which prevents them from riding up. My favorite ones come in 7 colors and are under $13.
I love throwing them on with cutoffs and slides in the summer for casual weekends. Plus, they’re great for post-baby. A layering tank is one of the most versatile pieces to have for a maternity wardrobe capsule.

BodyCon/Maxi Dresses
Lately, these dresses have been my go-to. First off – they’re comfortable. Not to mention you don’t have to worry about pulling it up all day long like you would with most maternity jeans.
These dresses aren’t restricting and usually, they’re lightweight which is perfect for a summer pregnancy. They come in so many different fits and for me, I can actually wear a lot of them post-baby as well.

Leggings
Do I really need to explain? lol. Leggings are maternity wardrobe must-haves for several reasons.
Leggings in general are comfortable and they’re no different for pregnancy. They’re not restricting, they’re breathable, and they’re easy to get on and off.
They’re also incredibly easy to style. Throw on a sweater or a tee and you’re out the door.
You can find some great deals on simple black leggings just about anywhere. Amazon has the widest variety in both colors and sizes.

Cardigans
Lots of em’. You won’t have to feel so bad about spending money on these since technically you don’t have to buy them in maternity styles.
You can get plenty of use out of cardigans during pregnancy as well as after. I love layering mine with fitted ruched tanks.

Jeans and/or denim shorts
Against your will, you just might have to wear something besides leggings out of the house every now and then. And if that, unfortunately, happens then your best bet is to just be prepared!
I didn’t invest in a TON of maternity jeans, just 2-3 styles that I knew I would actually wear. You can’t go wrong with a pair of cropped distressed denim jeans, denim cutoffs, and a pair of white jeans.

A good bra
Even the most basic maternity wardrobe needs a supportive, comfortable, and functional bra. The option above is all of the 3, plus it comes in multiple colors and is super affordable. You can wear it as a traditional bra and then unclip it if you plan to nurse.
Instead of having to buy separate bras for maternity and then more for nursing, you can save yourself some money by grabbing a bra in this style.
Comfortable Sneakers
This might seem like common sense but a supportive and comfortable pair of sneakers is a must. The pair above is a bit pricey but absolutely incredible. They are great for everyday wear and you can also wear them for working out.
And that’s it for this list of maternity wardrobe staples. I don’t think you need to go crazy shopping for your maternity wardrobe. I suggest giving a good look-through of your closet before investing in anything pricey. I think you’d be surprised just how much you can actually wear most of the way through your pregnancy!
