Wondering how people save money shopping with ebates (now known as Rakuten)? In this post, I’m sharing exactly how I’ve saved $691.23 so far this year.

If you’ve never heard of ebates/Rakuten you’re in luck! I’m going to give you all the details on what it is and how you can use it to save money shopping.

Update* Ebates is now Rakuten. I will use the two interchangeably throughout this post.

How To Save Money Shopping With Ebates/Rakuten

Ebates/Rakuten is a website that sends you cash back on all your online purchases. There is no “catch” and it really is as simple as the click of a button (if you choose that – more on that below).

There are over 2,000 stores that offer cash back through ebates including Sephora, Amazon, Kohls, Petsmart, and many others.

How to sign up for Ebates/Rakuten

  1. Go to and click “Join Now” in the top right corner.
  2. Enter your email & create a password.

Once you’ve signed up and entered all your information you’re all set! Now you’re ready to shop (and save money).

How to use Save Money Shopping With Ebates (now known as Rakuten)

Before you start shopping, head to and log in. Once you are logged in type the name of the store you want to shop at in the search bar. If the store participates with ebates it will show up and show the % that store offers back.

For example, say you want to shop at Kohl’s. Type “Kohl’s” in the search bar of the ebates site. Once it pops up, click “Kohl’s” and it will bring up the page that contains all coupons available (that’s right, ebates offers the stores coupons as well).

Either scroll through the coupons and hit the “Shop now” button if you find something you like OR just hit the “Shop Now” button on the left-hand side under the store name. Any of the “Shop Now” buttons will take you directly to kohls to shop. If you have a promo code or gift card, etc. you can still use this just as you normally would at check out.

Lately, I have been getting an “Activate Cash Back” pop up on the top right corner of my screen, probably due to my settings. If this happens to you, just click the button and it will continue to keep you connected.

THAT’S ALL. Once the store reports back to ebates that the order was completed that cashback will be put in your ebates account. Ebates sends a check every 3 months with your savings. If the account doesn’t total $10 by the end of the pay period then the check will be held until you reach the $10 and it will be sent in the next pay period.

You can view all your transactions, your cashback balance, and your “big fat” check history all in your Rakuten account. It will also tell you your “lifetime” cashback balance which I LOVE. I cannot believe how much money I have saved just by shopping through Rakuten!

As you can see above, I have a lifetime cashback amount of $996.21. To me, that’s pretty good for not having to clip coupons or shop during sale periods.

Ebates Extension (now known as Rakuten Extension)

To make it even easier, Rakuten has a button that you can install on your toolbar so that you never forget to use it! If you decide to install the button (why wouldn’t you?!) you don’t even have to go to the ebates website. Simply go to the site you want to shop at and hit the ebates button when you get there.

You can also link your credit cards to your Rakuten account so that when you shop in-store at an ebates affiliated store you still save. More examples: Express, Macy’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lord & Taylor.

Cashback percentages change daily so be sure to check out the “Double Cash Back” stores.

Save Money Shopping With Double Cash Back at Rakuten

Double cashback is exactly what it sounds like. Each day new retailers offer double cash back on purchases and the details will be right below the cashback amount.

In addition to double cash back percentages, there are also featured deals that offer double cashback in dollar amounts as well as deals that are higher percentages, but not necessarily double.

Additional Ways To Earn Money With Ebates (now known as Rakuten)

Ebates also offers rewards for referrals that sign up through your personal link (like the one I shared above). When your referral signs up and spends $25, you get $25 and they get $10. Pretty nice incentive.

Every member of ebates/Rakuten has a personal link and that link can be copied and pasted, emailed, and shared on social channels such as Twitter and Facebook.

I hope this explains ebates/Rakuten well. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below or shoot me an email.

Earn Cash Back Dining

Rakuten now offers 5% cashback via their app when dining at thousands of restaurants. The app is available for download in the App Store or Google Play.

Once downloaded, you can search for restaurants in your areas. You’ll have to link a credit card and once done all applicable deals will be linked to that card. When you’ve used your card to dine at a Rakuten affiliate restaurant, your cashback will automatically be added to your account.

Search For Travel & Vacations To Earn Cash Back

You can also earn cashback via Rakuten for travel and vacation when you book things such as airport parking reservations, hotel stays, car rentals, and more through the site.

Rakuten has a feature that allows you to search for hotels and vacation rentals, airport parking reservations, car rentals, etc., on sites such as, Priceline, Travelocity,, and more.

When browsing for reservations, you can sort through the search results either alphabetically or by cash back amount.

Rakuten Hot Deals

Be sure to Check out the Rakuten Hot Deals tab where you’ll find free shipping offers, BOGO deals, free gift with purchase offers, and cashback on gift cards.

Overall, Rakuten is a great place to shop for things you already purchase, while earning cash back. As mentioned earlier, I’ve earned a pretty significant amount of money just by shopping through the Rakuten site vs. specific retailer sites.
